FDA Ruling Does NOT Bust Silimed Implant Study |
 If you've been watching the news, you might think that the FDA denied market approval to silicone gel-filled breast implants. It's not true. Here's what really happened:
- The FDA advisory panel evaluating silicone gel-filled implants recommended market approval for one company's implants
- Rather than accept the panel's recommendation, the FDA asked for additional data
The panel's recommendation and the FDA's response were all based on their consideration of one company's liquid silicone gel-filled implants. The new data they want relates to what happens if the liquid gel-filled implants rupture.
Dr. Stevens is one of only fifteen surgeons in the United States participating in a different study — the Silimed Cohesive Gel Implant Study. These implants are filled with a semi-solid silicone gel which does not leak when the implant shell is cut. The semi-solid nature of the implant has earned the implants the nick name "gummy bear breast implants".
