Dear Charlie
Dear Charlie:
Is it true that lack of sleep raises your risk of
wrinkles?
Curious, age 29
Dear Curious:
Yes that is correct. Most body repair happens in
deep sleep, according to a Japenese study. That
is why you will notice that wrinkles are shallower
after a good night’s rest. Did you know that
poor sleeping habits also increases the risk of
being overweight? Just having two hours less
sleep than needed increases ghrelin (the hunger
hormone) and suppresses leptin (which makes
you feel full). Restless sleep also is connected
with high blood pressure, according to a study
in Hypertension Journal, and finally, the
American Journal of Epidemiology reports that
staying up late could even increase your risk of
breast cancer by 65%. Author Professor Cristina
Leske states that light activates production of
estrogen, promoting cancer cell growth.
So...now that you know all this...go to bed
